The Service

Active sourcing, not passive lookup

Most expert witness services give you access to a database. You search, you call, you wait. Criterion works differently — when you submit a case request, a search specialist reviews your case details and conducts an active search for candidates who fit the exact requirements of your matter.

That distinction matters in practice. A database search returns everyone who has listed the right specialty. An active search returns practitioners who are currently active in the relevant field, available within your timeline, free of conflicts with your case parties, and whose background will hold up to opposing scrutiny at the Daubert stage. Those are not the same list.

"We match the witness to the work, the timeline, and the theory. That is the Criterion standard."

Criterion sources expert witnesses across medical malpractice, personal injury, construction defect, intellectual property, commercial litigation, environmental, real estate, and engineering matters. If your case requires testimony, we can find the right witness for it — regardless of specialty or jurisdiction.

How It Works

From case submission to expert placement

Six steps, typically completed within 48 hours of your initial submission.

Submit your case details
Use the case intake form to tell us the specialty needed, practice area, relevant jurisdiction, timeline, and a brief description of what the expert will need to address. Two to three sentences on the case is sufficient at this stage.
Case review by a search specialist
A Criterion search specialist reviews your submission within hours. We assess specialty fit, sub-specialty requirements, geographic constraints, trial vs. deposition vs. consulting needs, and any specific qualities the case demands (treating physician vs. non-treating, plaintiff-friendly history, etc.).
Active Panel search
We search the Criterion Panel against your case criteria. Panel members who match are identified and evaluated for current availability and case fit before any contact is made.
Conflict screening and Daubert evaluation
Each candidate is run through conflict screening against your case parties. We also evaluate Daubert readiness — prior testimony record, publication history, current active practice status — before presenting any profile to you.
Pre-vetted profiles delivered to you
You receive two to three curated expert profiles — typically within 24–48 hours of submission — each with CV, credentials, fee structure, and current availability. No cold calls. No guesswork. You choose.
Introduction and engagement support
We facilitate the expert introduction, manage the initial engagement logistics, and remain available throughout the case as a coordination resource. If the first expert doesn't work out, we search again.

When to Use This Service

Cases where expert search makes the difference

  • You have an upcoming expert disclosure deadline and your current search efforts have stalled — directory calls are not converting to available, qualified candidates.
  • The case requires an active practitioner, not a career witness — opposing counsel will attack an expert who testifies full-time rather than practicing.
  • You're handling a specialty you don't regularly work with and need guidance on what a qualified expert in that area actually looks like.
  • A prior expert has become unavailable, conflicted, or disqualified, and you need a replacement quickly.
  • You're managing multiple cases simultaneously requiring experts in different specialties — Criterion can run parallel searches across cases.
  • The case is high-stakes enough that you want a second opinion on the expert you've already identified, or a backup option in reserve.
